4 Tips for Improving Your Relationship with Yourself

You often hear that the most important relationship a person can have is the one they have with themselves. It’s true a statement! Have you checked in with yourself lately to see how that relationship is going? That may sound corny, but how you treat yourself and how you view yourself affects not only your well-being but every relationship in your life. Here are a few ideas for cultivating your most important relationship—the one with yourself.

Know That Every Thought Doesn’t Deserve Your Attention

If you gave merit to every single thought you had, you’d go mad. By choosing what you give attention to, you are in control. All of our thoughts aren’t always true either—so don’t let them take up valuable real estate in your mind. One way to improve your relationship with yourself is to determine whether the thought you are having is really a true statement. If you are predicting something about the future, for example, you don’t know if it’s true or not because it hasn’t happened yet. Draw awareness to your thoughts periodically and see if there’s a pattern there that you can change or need to address.

Make Time to Meditate

It’s during those most chaotic times that meditation becomes that much more important in our lives. When we can sit there and bring awareness to the present moment, we allow ourselves to observe our thoughts with compassion, and then let them float on by. That said, it’s extremely hard for some people to watch their thoughts pass, and, like everything else in life, it takes practice. Finding your best way to meditate is an individual journey. How you let go of your thoughts may take a bit of research, perhaps through a personal growth platform that speaks to you.

Develop Your Whole Sense of Self

Throughout life, we are constantly defining who we are on the inside and outside. As you grow and understand yourself better, you come to know what you value, what you want to work on, how experiences have shaped you, how you are striving to achieve your goals, and many other ways we define sense of self. When you can honor your own soul and understand it with compassion, you can create better connections with others. If this is an area that’s hard for you to define or you’d like to work on it more, a self improvement course is an excellent tool for guiding you toward a better understanding of yourself. An insightful course will remind you of your soul’s purpose, teach self-love, and help you live a more fulfilling life.

Don’t Be Afraid to Challenge Yourself

Some people find it difficult to travel alone or go to a restaurant by themselves. If this sounds familiar, take yourself out of your comfort zone and see if you can find the benefits of discovering new things solo. It’s a great feeling when you can experience life in ways that challenge you. It makes you stronger and more resilient. You can also be proud of yourself and your efforts to grow.
